Cherry Picking with Zach # 11

By inthehuddleillinois | April 22nd, 2009

Cherry Picking with Zach #11 April 22, 2009

Last Wednesday I was given the opportunity to broadcast my first ever live baseball game as part of In the Huddle Illinois. This 2008 Class 2A state championship rematch between IVC and Olympia did not disappoint, as it was a great game which Olympia eventually took in 9 innings 6-3. Here are a few of the thoughts I took out of this game…

Olympia P Matt Frahm is a very, very good pitcher. While this may seem more obvious than a Yankees fan in Boston, I saw some things out of him that really impressed me. Through the first three or four innings it was pretty apparent that he did not have his best stuff. He was struggling to locate his pitches, and he really could not throw his curveball for a strike. What I saw was a pitcher just grinding it out on the mound, just trying to do whatever he could to work through his mechanics and find the release point on his breaking ball while holding down a very good IVC offense with just his fastball and a changeup. Then, once he found his curveball in about the fifth inning, that was pretty much all she wrote. He really started to dominate at that point, but it was the way in which he was able to respond to some adversity in the first inning (3 runs), especially against a greaIt IVC pitcher in Chris Razo, that really impressed me. He is a champion in the truest sense of the word.

- IVC 3B Jordan Parr has a GUN for an arm. I saw him in warmup throw one from the back edge of the dirt to the first basemen with no problem. He is Illinois State bound, and I think he could have a very, very nice career there. Seriously, how many more Parr’s can come through IVC???

-While they did not win the game, IVC is a team that is going to be there at the end of the year. While I am sure they made some mistakes in that game that they wish they could have back, that is an impressive team over in Chillicothe, and they will bounce back from this. They have more arms in the bullpen than the U.S. military, and a good offense. While I’m sure they were disappointed with the result of that game, I believe they will learn from their mistakes and be ready for them if they see them again down the road.

- Now, I am only 24 years old, so I guess I can not talk from a lot of years of experience, but I have played high school baseball, coached it for a couple of years now, and watched numerous games. With that being said, Olympia is one of the, if not the, strongest team mentally I have ever seen. Even when stuff was going bad in the first inning, they never seemed down and they definitely never seemed out of the game. It always seems like when things maybe aren’t going their way in a game, they look for something, anything, that they can use to turn the momentum, and ultimately the game, in their favor. Sometimes, it may be on a walk, other times on an error, or whatever the case or situation may be. While I don’t think many people would argue about how talented Olympia is and has been in the past, their mental toughness is second to none.

-Before I pass out for the night, I just wanted to send out one more big, big thank you to IVC for their hospitality. From providing us with drinks during the game to giving us a nice seat in their press box to broadcast the game, I cannot say enough about the program they have up in Chillicothe. Their field is one of the nicest I have ever seen, and the product they put out on the field is first class as well. Thanks again IVC!

Well, that’s it for tonight. Just got done with a tough Havana Rec League game, and its time for bed. Stay classy chronies!
